How to use live translation for language exchange and conversation practice

Free to try, no sign-up needed.

Language exchange and tandem partners often split time: you speak your target language while your partner replies in theirs, then you swap. FlashTranslate is a browser room built for exactly two languages—live voice translation plus an on-screen chat log on each device. It is a translation tool, not a teaching app: it does not grade your grammar, run drills, or replace a tutor.

Before your session, open flashtranslate.io and create a free room. Pick the two languages you are practising—the second dropdown defaults to your browser language when it is supported. Tap Share room or copy the room code so your partner can open the join link, choose their language from the pair locked to the room, and join. You can sit together with two laptops or meet over video elsewhere and use FlashTranslate only for the spoken layer. The trial does not require an account and includes five free minutes.

When you are both in the room, tap Start conversation and allow microphone access if you want to speak. Each person selects the language they will use for that stretch—your target language on your turn, your native language when you are helping your partner. Speak in short, clear sentences; the other person hears and reads the translation in theirs. When you miss a word or want to double-check phrasing, scroll the chat log together: what you said and how it was translated stay visible on screen for that session.

Typed chat helps for vocabulary checks or when someone is not ready for the mic. Type in the language you selected and tap Send; your partner still gets a translation. If you use voice, a quieter spot helps transcription stay accurate, and the mic level meter beside the live indicator should move when someone talks.

FlashTranslate will not correct your mistakes or save a lesson transcript for later—you rely on the live chat log and your own notes if you want to review afterward. If the connection wavers, status updates appear and the app tries to reconnect; tap Retry beside the status if things stay stuck. When practice is over, tap Leave room so the session does not keep running in the background.
